Terroir

The area of Castiglione in Teverina used to be inhabited by Villanovans and the Etruscans. The origin of Castiglione seems to date back to the Medieval period, but the first certain information of its existence dates back to XIII century when the first built up area (village) was formed around the Rocca Monaldeschi (XII century) which was originally used as watchtower for defence purposes.

History:

The history of Castiglione is closely linked to the historical events of the city of Orvieto where there was fighting between the Monaldeschi (Guelfi) and Filippeschi (Ghibellini) families.

Once the Monaldeschi family had defeated the Filippeschi family, they had control of the village and ruled it for more than a century. Their idea was to expand the village and increase the population, giving considerable privileges to those who moved to the countryside.

When Gianfrancesco Monaldeschi died, his power passed on to the Savelli family, who soon realized that the land was difficult to rule. There were frequent disputes between Lazio, Umbria and the State of the Church, so they decided to give the area to the Farnese family.

Castiglione in Teverina then became part of the dukedom of Castro.

Vegetation:

This is a hilly area with abundant vegetation. We can find broom, blackberry bushes, elms, alders, wild roses and hawthorn. On the lowland areas we can find white hornbeam, roverella and cerro. Not forgetting of course the woods of mixed oaks and the many evergreen trees like the olive.

Animals:

Wildlife here is well-known for nocturnal animals such as hoot owls, barn owls, common owls, tawny owls. During the day you ca see grey herons, hawks and magpies. Mammals include foxes, porcupines, hedgehogs, stone martens, wild boars and badgers.

Temperature:

Considerably hot summers and particularly cold winters.
